Liverpool

Once just a small tidal inlet on the northwestern coast of England by the River Mersey, the area was originally known as the "Leverpoole," referring to the turbid coastal waters. The small harbor had expanded greatly over time, thanks in large part to the additional of several manmade docks. The original dock was built in 1708, a Herculean task that involved draining the water from the shoreline and building an enormous stone dock over the old pool with floodgates to hold back the tide. Over time, new more efficient docks were added, extending the shoreline further and further out into the waters of the Mersey.
